HELP PETFINDER & TLC FIND FOREVER HOMES FOR PETS IN BUFFALO!

HELP PETFINDER & TLC FIND FOREVER HOMES FOR PETS IN BUFFALO!

Petfinder has helped facilitate more than 25 million pet adoptions through nearly 13,000 shelter and rescue organizations – one of which is Ten Lives Club.

To celebrate its two decades of helping pets meet their people, Petfinder is asking animal lovers nationwide to watch the #MetOnPetfinder 20th anniversary video with a goal of reaching one million views. The video shows how adoptable pets have transformed the lives of their adopters.

If the one million view goal is reached by Oct. 24, Petfinder will donate $200,000 to the Petfinder Foundation, funding twenty $10,000 grants to select shelter and rescue organizations nationwide, and one of those grants could go to Ten Lives Club!

After you watch the video, we’d love to hear about your Petfinder success stories on social media. Just use the hashtag #MetOnPetfinder and be sure to tag @tenlivesclub in your post.

TLC WAREHOUSE UPDATE!

TLC WAREHOUSE UPDATE!

Thank you to everyone who has already donated to the warehouse fund!  We are so close to our goal.

The Ten Lives Club Warehouse is now almost completed and the cement floor is poured. Unfortunately, we are still short $7000.00 to pay the contractor that built the warehouse.

We are in need of a cement approach to our garage door so we can get a fork truck in and out of the building. The approach we need is 10' feet by 12' feet. If anyone could help us with the last part of the cement approach, please call 716-646-5577!

We have already given our 30 days notice and need to be out by Thursday. Sept 15th. Without the approach, we can't move out of our current warehouse space because of the difference between the warehouse and driveway.

DUTIES INCLUDE: cleaning cages, scooping/changing litter boxes, sweeping, mopping, laundry, general cleaning/housekeeping and various odd jobs.

DAYS/TIMES:

MONDAY, TUESDAY & THURSDAY TO SATURDAY
ANYTIME BETWEEN 9AM & 5PM

We have been short a vet tech lately and are way behind on processing incoming cats and performing surgeries. TLC had to take a small break in accepting surrenders. We have NO available cage space!  Every cage is full and we even borrowed more cages.

TLC is a free roaming shelter but new cats are kept in cages until seen by our vet. In our infirmary, we also use cages to keep germs from spreading.

This is only the 4th time in our 15+ year history we have had to stop accepting more cats. However, emergency situations arose and we had to help.

We are slowly catching up but please be patient with us.  Every staff member is overwhelmed and very overworked right now.

Ten Lives Club staff is very committed and loyal!  Thank goodness for EACH of them!

Thanks as always for everyone's support!
We could not do any of this without each of you believing in TLC!

PETFINDER WORKS WONDERS FOR TLC KITTY

Benjamin Stein-d'Lobita and Axel d'Lobita with Winston
Submitted By: Benjamin Stein-d'Lobita and Axel d'Lobita

Several years ago before I had moved to Buffalo from Long Island, NY, a neighborhood black cat that had eye problems disappeared during the spring and was never seen again. He had always followed me home as when I walked around, meowing and insisting on endless belly rubs. I always wondered what had happened to him. I sincerely hoped that wherever he was, he was at peace and somewhere he was loved.

My parents had always firmly believed in “don’t shop, adopt” and took in many rescued animals, leading to my passion for rescuing pets. In December 2015, my then-fiancé (now husband) Ben and I had been mulling over the idea of adding a new furry member to our family. We had left a multi-roommate situation where our three-year-old cat Orion was one of six living in a three level house. He no longer had his best friend (a white Siamese mix named Walter) that he had bonded with over a year and a half. Ben and I had also discussed finding a special needs cat that required extra love and attention. We knew whomever we adopted had to be cat-sibling friendly and able to adapt to a small apartment. I began my search on Petfinder.com daily, scrolling through a plethora of adoptable cats while working overnights at a hotel.

A week before Christmas I had discovered Winston's profile. The Ten Lives Club of the Walden Galleria Mall had a posted a short paragraph on his history. He was a rescue from a high kill shelter that lost one eye but still had all the charm in the world and love to share. I printed out his Petfinder listing and came home the following morning and showed it to Ben. Winston’s story and personality called to me and I knew from that moment I wanted to bring him home. I called the shelter to ask if he was still available after returning from a holiday trip. Kristen, the manager from TLC, confirmed he was still at the shelter.  I asked Ben his opinion on Winston and he agreed that he would be a good fit for us. Every few days I would check the shelter’s Facebook page to see if Winston was still there, and he was. We had to stand by to prepare our home for a new addition and ensure he would have a smooth transition. Ben and I agreed we would not adopt a new family member until everything was ready.

A month before Valentine’s Day, we made the trip to the mall to meet Winston after weeks of patiently waiting for the right time. An hour and a half ride from downtown by bus, we arrived in the afternoon and requested to have a meet and greet. Kristen noted that if he were to go home with us, he must have a slow introduction to Orion. The second stipulation was that he must take his beloved green coil toy home. After the approval was given we asked if we could return the next day with our friend’s car to pick him up. As of January 15th, 2016 Winston came home with us, coil and all. Orion and Winston met nose to nose through the carrier and behind the bathroom door; Orion seemed unfazed but interested in who this new friend could be. After a few days we allowed them to interact with supervision but barrier-free. Winston became a much-loved part of our small family. His similarities to the long-departed neighborhood cat continued to make me wonder daily if this was him in a new body but the same spirit.

Ben now volunteers at TLC’s Galleria shelter, and we have since adopted our third cat and second special needs baby, a deaf cat named Neil. We thank not only the Ten Lives Club for their dedication to rescuing high risk, special needs, FIV+, and senior cats but also Petfinder.com for helping us connect with them and find Winston.

KITTENS STUFFED IN BAG - LEFT OUTSIDE TLC SHELTER

Submitted By:  Stephanie Stamoolis
August 19, 2016

It happened again! Working in a shelter is very emotional work. Days are filled with ups and downs. We rejoice when cats we love find amazing forever homes, and then there are days like today when we are filled with a mix of emotions.

Today someone left a duffle bag filled with 5 kittens on our doorstep. They were left when we were not open. Luckily for us one of of workers showed up early and found them.

They were covered in fleas, feces, urine, hungry, dehydrated and crammed in to a very small bag. Everyone here felt sad, frustrated, helpless, overwhelmed, and mad. We understand that people may feel overwhelmed and need help. What we don't understand is why they felt that they could not call us and ask for help, or stop in when we were open so that the kittens did not have to wait for help. We also understand that the people that do these horrible things are the minority. Our community is filled with kind animal loving people who make what we do possible.

Despite the strong emotions, our dedicated staff got to work caring for these kittens. They were given baths, flea medication, deworming medication, vaccinations, and much needed food and water. The kittens ran to the bowls and hurriedly ate and drank as much as they could. We have no idea how long they had been in that bag. It could have been as long as 12 hours. They were in such a small bag that they could not move and were stacked on top of each other. With this hot summer, they are lucky to be alive.

These sweet babies are now safe with us. They will never again have to go through another experience like this again. We will treat their illnesses and begin to teach them that they can trust humans again. We will find them loving forever homes. All of this comes at a cost. We estimate that it will cost us about $900 to help these kittens. We receive no funding from the government and rely solely on donations from the public.

TLC MOURNS LOSS OF BELOVED FRIEND & VOLUNTEER

On Sunday afternoon, September 4th, our dear friend and dedicated TLC Volunteer, Marianne Annibali was hit by a car while jogging.  The accident happened on Walden Ave in Depew and she died instantly.  Her death has left a big hole in all of our hearts and she will be greatly missed.

Several years ago, Marianne and her husband Rich, adopted a TLC Cat named Tucker.  When Marianne saw an opportunity to volunteer at our Pet Supply Plus location on Union Road, she joined our TLC family.  She always brought along her 14 year daughter Marirose.

Marianne then started fostering and was seldom without a Mom and kittens at their home.  As if that was not enough, She also cleaned Friday nights at Petsmart after learning we were very short handed.

Marianne and Rich also volunteered for a Greyhound rescue group. She certainly shared the love and compassion for animals with her family. She ran five miles every day, rain or shine.  On her run, she always stopped by Marianne McPherson’s house to chat about her fosters. Dorine, who also lives in the neighborhood, would frequently see her running down Walden Ave.

Marianne said she needed to run every day so she would stay healthy. She wanted to be around a long time to watch her daughter grow up, get married and maybe someday enjoy a house full of grand kids.

Marianne worked at Sisters Hospital where she also had many friends. She was married to her husband Rich for 34 years and her daughter Marirose will celebrate her 15th Birthday next week.

This is such a tragedy for her family and ours here at Ten Lives.  We know she is surrounded by numerous animals up at Rainbow Bridge but things will never be the same for those of us she left behind.

PRAYERS FOR JEANNIE

Katherine Street in the First Ward of South Buffalo is particularly a problem area for stray and unwanted cats.  Recently, Ten Lives took in five kittens from a business property on Katherine Street.  There were three more at the time that volunteers were trying to trap. Those three were rescued last week.

Some may not have given this kitten - we named Jeannie - a chance. But at Ten Lives Club, this is what we do.  Although it can be so heartbreaking to see what neglect and abandonment can do to the kitties that come to us for help.

Jeannie was surrendered with severe eye infections in both eyes.  Her eyes had gone untreated for so long it's clear in the picture to the left how severe her infection was when she came to us. One eye is beyond saving and will need to have enucleation (eye removal).

Her foster home has been treating Jeannie with three different eye medicines six times a day.  That's 18 times a day plus antibiotics!  Her foster Mom, Paula, turned this very sick little baby into a perky little kitten who has started to play.

It's amazing how far little Jeannie has come in less than two weeks with medication and tender loving care!

Paula has been with Ten Lives Club for 14 years. She has easily fostered and/or adopted out over 1,000 plus moms and kittens!

Paula is a true cat angel to little Jeannie and all of the kitties that she takes under her loving wings. Ten Lives is so grateful to have Paula and all of our committed foster homes! They give so many cats and kittens such loving care and the chance to find their forever homes.

Jeannie will have the one eye removed when she's bigger as Animal Eye Care could not save that infected eye.
But now, she is out of pain and can see with her other eye.
We still need "Prayers for Jeannie" and thank everyone for the donations and kind words of hope and love for her!
We love our little Jeannie!

Thanks to all who believe and support us in all that we do!

If you would like to make a donation towards Jeannie's continued care, please CLICK HERE!

Adult cats age 9 months and over are $25.00 (Reg. $50.00) and kittens (under 9 months) are $75.00 (Reg. $125.00) each.

All of our kitties have been spayed/neutered, tested for FIV & FIP, vaccinated (rabies & distemper), treated for fleas & ear mites and given a thorough health check prior to adoption.  *Some kittens are too young for their first rabies vaccine.*
